Progress of maknig of 16-bit inspired drawing, especially based on PC-98, one japanese computer series, check more info from wikipedia since I actually have zero knowledge of PC-98......
Also a tiny question list about being an artist, steal from one user from zdiskuss called Lillen.

Important mention

This blog post mentioned PC-98 and its games based on the computer.
However, adult and sexual themes were common in PC-98 games, although I don't show any adult contents in my website, but some of outside links any lead to suggestive, even sexual topics, keep it mind and be careful if you're looking for PC-98 contents.

Hi hiya!!!!! It's been late since the Christmas ended, this blog was supposed be post after finish my Christmas drawing in December in 14th, then my in-home job hitted me and I got freebies commission to draw, so I don't have any engry (Or lazy ass) to write this article, plus my brain is too empty for thinking for any words to wrtie.
The original idea was started in this year's summer, it was going be draw in traditional way such like coloured penclis, since I hadn't draw in traditional in years...... Until I learned of PC-98 pixel arts.

If you want to view this drwaing on actual old hardware such like PC-98, there's BMP and MAG versions for ya, hopefully it really works on actual PC-98 since I don't have one (^^;)

How did I know PC-98 artworks & obsessed with it

In February, a video by Kellybadakdesign (Include suggestive images) appears on my facebook feed, yeah yeah I know it's a very dumb way to know a old-school technology, even this video is talking about PC-98 pixelart more like PC-98 itself, but as a sucker of pixel art, especially found out 8-bit retro-style exists on internet since young. I begin to digging into more pixel arts from PC-98, such like a trend on gaming forum NeoGaf (Include suggestive images), before I moved on and almost forget about PC-98 pixel art.

Then comes to December, a website called Retro Gallery pops to my life, which is artwork showcase from old technologies such like commdore 64, even PC-9800 and more! I finally got interested with PC-98 pixel arts, even limited to 16-bit and dithering, PC-98 artists still have their superpower to making colourful pieces, no matter high-detailed or doodle & hand draw-like...... Speak of PC-98, I even found animated show (Based on the original manga although I hadn't watched) called 16-bit Sensation, it's talking about a making of galgame mostly but it also mentioned PC-98, unfortunely I'm not a fan of the trope, since I want to see how people drawing on PC-98 back then! But it's one of pushes to PC-98 pixel art obsession. (?)

Hopefully I wouldn't lost interest again like February and how I got hyperfixation into medias...... (Expect Kururin series, which is my main obsession since middle school)

↑↑ Screenshot from the animated show "16bit Sensation: Another Layer", about the protagonist holding a game "Kanon" (Which originally is an adult game), explains the game to the shopkeeper, I can't spoiler more although lmafo

Drawing progress!

Sketch

Outline

Clear outline, move to Clip Studo Paint after having enough of drawing with touchpad, because Edge is table unfriendly.

Adding more weight for outline! Which based on tutorial, and makes it looks more like my artstyle.

Save two type of images: outline and background, since edge don't support CSP's layer, I also use black for edge's default transparent colour.

Finally back to Edge, now adding some colours and shading!

Then dithering and AAs (Anti

Aliasing), about giftbox items, I use the reference from Idol Project 2.

realise I set it 600x400 instead of 640x400, which is screen size of PC-98.

Casual artist questionnaire

Let's move on to question list by Lillen on zdiskuss, you can get the blank list from there if you're interested.

Name:
Name is Cco0orn! Also call me Corn, which based on my irl nickname. (Again)
Favorite kind of art to make:
Actually I don't have my favourites, although maybe I'll draw more pixel arts since I like drawing small stuffs like graphics, also hopefully I'll get an pixel artist job.
Digital or traditional art?
Digital superme currently lmafo, sadly I hadn't draw any traditional art (Expect doodles) in ages, especially coloured penclis and alcohol markers, never touched my copic markers after my high school era ended, expect doodle and some tests...
Art school or self taught?
My parents took me to some art classes (For kids of course, since I was little, also some classes runned by anime-styled artists) after they found out I like to draw, even let me join the graphic design subject in high school.
Realism or stylized art?
Stylized & toony, chibi are superme for me! No matter come to character design and everything.
Characters or landscapes?
Characters currently, especially Kururin series, I think myself need to draw more landscapes and different characters in future.
Favorite colors:
I used to obsessed with blue back I was little, but right now yellow is my favourite, after 2024 (or earler), especially bright yellow, golden yellow and every yellow similar of these. No worries I still like blue although it's my second colour, such like sky blue and water blue (Same as Kururin!).
Themes or subjects in your art:
Aside Kururin series, I also like to draw animal characters (Toony, or TDM, small-proportion characters), everything cute or I find it cool, I draw whatever I want, although I draw too much Kururin in currently......
Favorite art movements:
Memphis, post-modern, superflat pop, unfortunely I need to learn these more because actually I have no knowledge about these, especially after high school.
Artists who inspire you:
In high school, my art style was inspired by some artists from a book "Impact Illustration", Which I mentioned in this diary post, also superflat pop.
Now my brain is very empty when trying to remember who inspire current artstyle..... But right now I kinda got inspired by 90s doujinshi artists and want to draw similar things, thank for old web and PC-98.
Movies, tv, games, music, or books that inspire you:
KURURIN SERIES AGAIN!!! But Kururin Paradise inspired me more to drawing, that's how I draw thick outlines with colourful theory.
Currently I want to draw toony & chibi human characters, based on anime "Fun Fun Pharmacy" and "Magical DoReMi", thanks for 90-00s doujin websites again.
Do you have OCs? Share your favorites.
Dang I hadn't introduction my original characters yep, other than artfight but you need an account to check out, maybe I'll write a blog about my characters one day.
Talk about my character, my favourites are Kidzo (The lab creature, java sparrow bird) and Mochi (Turtle magical girl), one is my childhood character, also I find their personality fun because native and dumbass characters are cool.
Your biggest art strengths:
I.D.K. Maybe I can draw something cute...???
Your biggest art weakness:
Everything. *Cough*
My biggest weakness is I have obsession to draw same things over and over again, no matter about Kururin and animal characters, but right now let me draw some commissions for imrpove myself first.
Proudest art achievements:
When people said my drawing inspiring them, like my one friend said they got inspired by myself, especially how I draw Kururin in my artstyle.
The hardest thing about being an artist:
How to make money (Living) with my skill and drawings :/
The people who love and support your art:
My boyfriend, besties and my family, also you who is reading this blog!
Do you sell your art or take commissions?
I wish, finding an art job in Taiwan is hard, so I'll take commission first, but the problem is: Who af want my drawing???
Art Advice for your younger self:
DRAW WHATEVER YOU WANT EVEN THEY'RE DARK OR AWKWARD, DUMBASS! Also anyway keep your note when you get an idea from mind everytime.
Never, NEVER, throw your old drawings away, I don't care you hate it whatever, these are important for self-improve and art ideas.

That's all folks, happy 2026 new year!
